Steampunk Toys

Posted in Patch Together on July 26th, 2010 by Lori

I’ve always had a soft spot for steampunk that I never really acted on. A couple months ago PatchTogether asked for contest theme ideas for their toy competition. I brought up Steampunk and it was picked :)

Here are two of my designs. I could really use a vote! (Register with the site then click on the page, scroll down and pick 1-5 and then “confirm”). Hopefully you’ll pick 5 ;)

If the designs have a large number of votes in a month’s time then PT might pick the design to move onto “preproduction” where people can preorder the toy. If there are at least 30 preorders then the toy is created. How cool is that??? It’ll be a super limited toy release and certainly a conversation starter at the office :)

Well here are my two subjects: Vapore Macchina Insetto and SteamFish

Woot: Art Titles Reinterpreted

“The Burning Giraffe” is the title of a S. Dali painting. I took it to the extreme :)

Trying something new . . .again

I have a few pieces of art where I start out in 3d then move to 2d to finish up the pieces. A few of them are waiting to be submitted to the PatchTogether Steampunk contest. In the meantime here’s one I did last night just for giggles.

Enjoy! (oh, and I’m testing out a polysoup logo, not sure if it’s working for me or not.)

WoW Avatars

Posted in Woot on July 3rd, 2010 by Lori

So I was doing my computer backups today (just feel kinda unlucky for some reason so I thought it’s better safe than sorry) and I stumbled upon an awesome blast from the past for me. I was once part of an awesome World of Warcraft guild. I also became the webmaster and designed the site. One day I was bored and decided to “reward” active members on the forums be giving them their very own custom avatar. I took a screenshot of their character so I could get their skin color, hair, eyes, markings, etc correct and drew up a fun little picture for them and them alone. Usually I tried to make them a bit quirky and in some cases there’s a story behind them :) The drawings took about a couple hours each but I had to wait until the perfect inspiration hit before making something.

Here are 17 of the avatars I made until work and other projects got in the way.

PS. I was the Moonkin.

REBOOT!

Holy Fazoli!

Where has all the time gone. I spend all this precious brain juice on setting up a site and poof, the minute things get hectic at home my updates disappear.

SO what have I been doing?

I MOVED. It took a while to pack the house, find a new one and all that guff but it’s done. I went from Champaign IL to Austin TX. I must say I absolutely LOVE this place. I guess I was a sun child and didn’t even know it. Bye bye snow I hope to see you never again. Things are almost unpacked enough for me to be able to relax and start doodling again.

Villainous Victorian Velociraptor has finally bit the dust :( She was a good design and lived longer than all of my earlier designs PUT TOGETHER. So I’m getting somewhere! :) I haven’t really submitted much since, but I hope to soon.

I’m still loving PatchTogether. It’s a site where you can get your designs created into toys if they like it enough. They had a call out for themes and I threw out “Steampunk”. Guess what . . .THEY LIKED IT. Now for the month of July the theme will be Steampunk. I think this is the first time where people had a month to come up with their designs so I’m expecting a lot of awesome. I really took my time with this entry and modeled it in 3d to get all the details just right. I can’t wait to post it. It might be a little more expensive than the average at PatchTogether but I assure you it’s different :) .

And thanks to Wolfie for poking and rawring me back to life :P

Patch Together

I’ve got another design up at Patch Together! This time it’s “Minion”. Hopefully soon I won’t feel like I’m running around like a Mad woman and instead have time to flesh out a few of these characters. Minion was done in about an hour to go along with a quick contest at Imaginism.com. Bobby Chui was interviewing one of the Writing Directors of the movie “How to Train Your Dragon” (excellent movie btw) and they wanted people to create something quickly using the theme “Goth Dragon”. I didn’t want my design to be so narrowly focused to I used some goth ideas and abstracted them out a little. Enjoy! If you’d like to vote for him (I know I’d like you too) :) Click on the picture!
